Cornel Amariei, the founder of .lumen, together with Andrea, who has been blind since birth, walking side by side through a forest. Andrea is wearing the .lumen glasses on her head.

The .lumen glasses were designed with one mission in mind: to bring freedom of movement to the visually impaired. At the heart of that mission lies one core feature: Guide Me.

The .lumen glasses are like a guide-dog, on your head

Unlike technologies that only announce obstacles, the .lumen glasses guide users safely around them. Inspired by guide dogs, the Guide Me function doesn’t react to every object individually; it plans a safe path, step by step.

Just like a guide dog doesn’t bark five times if there are five obstacles, .lumen calmly leads you through them.

How it works

While walking, the glasses use six integrated cameras to scan and analyze the surroundings in real time.They detect:

  • ground-level obstacles (curbs, potholes, parked cars, scooters);

  • overhead ones (branches, signs, window ledges);

  • and even subtle ground irregularities that a cane can’t reach.

They also identify key landmarks such as pedestrian crossings, stairs, doors, and bus stops. To ensure full safety, the system detects hazardous surfaces, such as puddles, snow, or road edges.

Guiding through vibration: an intuitive new language

The front of the glasses provides gentle vibrations on the forehead, indicating the safe direction to move. It’s an intuitive, natural communication channel between the user and the device.

In simple terms: follow the vibration.

With no intrusive audio cues, this haptic feedback system enables natural, confident movement and a true sense of independence.

Tested and trusted

Guide Me feature has been tested with over 400 blind users across 40+ countries in real-world urban and rural environments. In the coming months, the .lumen testing caravan will travel to over 30 Romanian cities, allowing participants to experience the glasses first-hand.

Test the glasses

Romania, the home of .lumen, will be the first country where the glasses are commercialised, starting at the beginning of 2026. Shortly after, the company plans to expand across Europe to scale.

You can meet the team at some of the world’s leading technology events:

  • GITEX Dubai (October 13–17, 2025)

  • Web Summit Lisbon (November 10–14, 2025)

  • Medica Düsseldorf (November 17–20, 2025)

  • CES Las Vegas (January 6–9, 2026)
